Traditional palapa homes in a verdant jungle garden overlooking the sandy beaches and unique village of Yelapa, Mexico
Welcome to our hideaway in Yelapa — a 45-minute water taxi ride from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Savor the panoramic views of sandy beaches, misty mountain-sides and spectacular sunrises upriver. Staying in the old village of Yelapa you will feel part of a native tradition, awakening to the sounds of tropical birds and village life. Our two traditional palapa-style homes are in a gated property and separated by lush gardens.
Casa Iguana
Casa Mariposa
Our property is a 7-10 minute walk uphill from the Yelapa town dock, village restaurants and shops. Quiet sandy beaches for comfortable swimming along the south side of the bay are just 5-7 minutes down the hill. The Yelapa Bay’s long sandy beach with its row of restaurants and beach umbrellas is a 20-minute walk through the town. There is a lovely waterfall just 15 minutes from our property. Wonderful hikes up the Tuito River take you to hidden gorges and waterfalls — where if you’re lucky you might see colorful giant parrots (military macaws) mating in the Abilla trees.
In our opinion, the best restaurants are in the village itself, as the beach cafes cater to the daily tourists with predictable Mexican seaside fare. The village restaurants are exceptional and reasonably priced. We’re often seduced away from cooking at home because three fresh blue corn tortilla tacos are available for $5 US at Los Abuelos (“The Grandparents”). The chef delivers world-class meals at unbelievably low prices — and the grandmothers are often cooking those tortillas right in front of you.
The Yacht Club, the famed restaurant on the town beach, offers live music several nights a week. And if you’re looking for the best BBQ chicken and ribs, or today’s sea catch cooked 4 different ways, check out Pollo Bollo, a village icon of open-air eating. In fact, almost everything in Yelapa is open-air because the air is so fresh that there is rarely a time when being indoors is preferable.
When you want to cook something at home, two local grocery stores carry a good selection of provisions, cold drinks and fresh vegetables. Our linens and serving-ware are sufficient to host up to10 people for dinner at Casa Iguana, and 6 to 8 at Casa Mariposa.
A list of dining options, guidelines for the house and tips on life in the jungle will be sent to you upon receipt of your reservation.
